The event and the context
From September 4th to 6th, the coast of Roca Vecchia becomes the stage for Giants in Flight, the International Kite Festival. The event takes place near the archaeological area, a site of primary historical importance that preserves the layers of settlements dating back to the Bronze Age, overlooking one of the most iconic cliffs on the Adriatic side of Salento. The combination of past historical evidence and the dynamism of the festival offers a natural stage where the wind and the marine horizon define the space of action.
An aerial design experience
For three days, the atmosphere of the coastline is transformed thanks to the presence of professionals from various nations who lead acrobatic and guided kite maneuvers. The installations, characterized by imposing dimensions and complex geometries, traverse the sky of Salento, turning the celestial vault into a dynamic outdoor art installation. The technical precision of the participants and the aesthetic care of the flying sculptures allow observers to witness the aerodynamic potential of kites in a highly specialized context.
Program and activities
The cultural offering of the festival is not limited to flight performances but extends through a series of events aimed at education. Educational workshops designed for younger age groups are planned, aimed at illustrating the basic principles of aerodynamics and kite-building techniques. During the evening hours, the program includes night flight performances, during which the structures are artificially illuminated, creating visually striking effects against the darkness of the coast.
Hospitality and territory
Alongside the recreational and sporting component, the event integrates the promotion of local excellence. Stands dedicated to typical local products are set up, allowing visitors to deepen their knowledge of Salento's food and wine in a convivial setting. The schedule is enriched by live music performances that accompany the various stages of the day, making participation an opportunity to discover the landscape and cultural heritage of this part of Puglia during a period of low seasonal influx.
Logistical information
The festival will take place in the area in front of the Roca Vecchia archaeological site. Access to the area is free. For further details regarding the updated event calendar, specifications on workshops, and how to participate in the food stands, it is recommended to consult the official communication channels of the event.
