Chiavenna Crotti Festival: A Journey Through Valchiavenna's Gastronomic Tradition

The cultural identity of the Crotti of Chiavenna

The Crotti Festival in Chiavenna represents a landmark in the Lombardy food and wine scene. Established in 1965, the event aims to safeguard and promote the culture linked to the crotti, natural cavities formed under the mountain slopes surrounding the town. These environments are characterized by the sorel phenomenon, a cold current of air that emerges from rock crevices, ensuring a constant temperature ideal for storing wine and dairy products in every season.

An experience between history and taste

The 2026 edition will take place over the weekends of September 5-6 and September 12-13. The village of Chiavenna, awarded the Orange Flag by the Italian Touring Club for the quality of its historic center and artistic heritage, serves as a natural backdrop for the event. The urban layout, dominated by fine Renaissance architecture and alpine views, welcomes visitors in an atmosphere suspended between past and present.

The heart of the event is identified in the route called Andèm a Cròt. This gastronomic itinerary allows participants to enter a selection of Valchiavenna crotti, some of which are usually inaccessible to the public. The experience translates into a tasting journey that highlights local raw materials, an authentic expression of a mountain territory isolated and preserved over time.

Culinary excellence of Valchiavenna

During the festive days, visitors can deepen their knowledge of the local food and wine tradition through the tasting of iconic products. Among the featured specialties are the typical bresaola, gnocchetti di Chiavenna – prepared according to the traditional recipe with flour and bread – and the torta fioretto, a typical dessert enriched with wild fennel seeds. There is also no shortage of biscottini di Prosto, a famous pastry production from the village of Piuro, which worthily accompanies the end of every meal.

Logistical details and participation

Participation in the event requires booking the routes, which is highly recommended given the expected turnout. For up-to-date information on tickets, tour availability, and opening hours of the individual crotti, you can consult the official website of the event or contact the organizational office. The festival takes place regularly even in the event of adverse weather conditions, thanks to the sheltered layout of the tasting sites.
