The Historical Procession of Prato: faith and memory in the heart of the city

The celebration of the Prato tradition

On September 8th, the city of Prato renews a centuries-old bond with its historical identity through the Historical Procession. The event celebrates the Holy Girdle, the Marian relic kept inside the Cathedral of Santo Stefano, a building that represents the fulcrum of local artistic heritage with the famous external pulpit by Donatello and Michelozzo.

The procession and the participants

The procession sees the participation of over five hundred participants who parade along the streets of the medieval center. The procession is composed of representatives of the city magistracies, armed men, valets, and historical groups from various Italian locations, each of which contributes to evoking the ceremonial atmosphere of the past. The route winds along the main streets, offering visitors a vivid perspective on urban architecture and the historical dynamics that characterized the city's development.

The display of the relic

The culminating moment of the day takes place in Piazza Duomo, a space that has kept its civil and religious function intact since the Middle Ages. Here the solemn display of the Holy Girdle takes place, which is exhibited from the Donatello pulpit, visible from the entire square filled with citizens and spectators. The relic represents not only an object of worship, but an element of social cohesion around which the civic conscience of Prato has been built over the centuries.

A shared cultural heritage

The event represents a rare opportunity to observe the reenactment of ancient ceremonial protocols in an authentic architectural context. The meticulous care dedicated to the reconstruction of period clothing and the choreography of the movements makes the Historical Procession a rigorous testimony of the link between ecclesiastical history and the city's institutional tradition. Participation is open to the public, who can follow the procession along the predetermined route until it reaches the cathedral, the moment when the entire city gathers to witness the final religious ritual.
