The Corsa degli Zingari in Pacentro between devotion and identity

The ancestral rite of Pacentro

On September 6, 2026, the village of Pacentro, listed among the most characteristic towns in Italy for its perfectly preserved medieval layout and imposing fortified structures, becomes the stage for the Corsa degli Zingari. This event, documented for over six hundred years, does not represent a simple sports competition, but rather a sacred ritual linked to the cult of the Madonna di Loreto.

A path of endurance

The route, extremely arduous, sees participants running barefoot over rough terrain consisting of woods, stony ground, and the bed of the Vella stream. The course begins at the Pietra Spaccata locality on Colle Ardinghi and culminates in front of the church of the Madonna di Loreto. The absence of footwear makes the event a display of extreme physical endurance and a form of personal expiation or vow, a tangible expression of the local community's identity.

The debut of the Trail degli Zingari

The 2026 edition introduces a significant change to the traditional program with the establishment of the Trail degli Zingari, scheduled for Saturday, September 5. The competition is divided into two distances, 16 km and 25 km, allowing athletes to challenge themselves on the trails of the Morrone and Majella mountains. The initiative is part of the naturalistic context of the Majella National Park, enhancing the biodiversity and morphology of the Abruzzo territory through a modern and sustainable sporting approach.

Logistical details and participation

The event unfolds over two days, involving the entire town and the surrounding natural areas. For those wishing to attend the traditional race or participate in the trail events, it is recommended to reach Pacentro in advance due to the particular road network of the historic village. Registration for the trail races and updated information regarding access to the race course and safety regulations are available through the organization's official channels. Please remember that the Corsa degli Zingari maintains its character as a sacred and identity-defining event; therefore, the public is invited to maintain respectful behavior along the entire perimeter of the track, particularly in the most difficult sections where the passage of the runners requires maximum attention and caution.
